Engineering Training Programme
Thank you for landing on our page. Here you will find information relating to all things engineering in Torfaen.
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘engineering’? It could be large scale buildings, bridges, roads or the art of making things. We’re on a mission to share information about engineering and bust any myths people might have about pursuing it as a career (you don’t need a degree first of all!)
Along with a group of local businesses and partners (Torfaen County Borough Council, Pro Steel Engineering and Coleg Gwent), we’re looking to build confidence and awareness of the incredible roles and careers engineering can offer for people of all ages and skillsets.
We have some amazing engineering businesses here in Torfaen who have worked on bridges, railways, stadiums and much more; we want to help them support the next generation.
Traineeship vs degree
While a degree can absolutely benefit you in many roles and opportunities, there are also many alternative options available if you just have the desire to give it a go.
A new, bespoke traineeship and training approach aiming to upskill the local workforce has been developed. The aim is for engineering businesses to take on trainees (with no formal qualifications or work experience) from the local Torfaen area in order to upskill them while they earn a wage at the same time.
Essentially you learn on the job. In return, the businesses have an enthusiastic member of staff to work on the exciting projects they have on and ultimately look to grow the business and plan for the future.
Here are just some of the skills you can learn/enhance through our traineeship on top of the engineering skills:
- Critical thinking
- Presentation and communication skills
- Number crunching and statistics
- Data analysis
- Problem solving
- Organisational skills
- Project management
These added skills could eventually lead to job opportunities within logistics, operation management, supply chain and more!
So, how can we help?

Are you a Torfaen-based engineering business? Are you looking to grow the business or just need an extra pair of hands to manage the day-to-day supply? Then a traineeship could be a good choice for you.
Think of a trainee like an employee; you can train and mould them to fit the business, and hopefully they enjoy working with you that they choose to stay with you for the long-term.
Yes, the trainee must be paid while being trained, but it gives you the flexibility to perhaps review the needs of the business long-term and plan for any succession changes that could be needed depending on the age range and skillset of the business.
If you let us know what needs there are within the business, we can either look to recruit a trainee for you and/or review your current staff’s training programme or if you have never taken on a trainee before, we can provide the support to help you expand your workforce.
There’s absolutely no obligation to sign up, so take a look of the brochure to see what’s on offer. We’re more than happy to chat through any requirement questions you may have.
Parent/teacher on behalf of someone
Do you have a child, a student or a friend unsure of their career path or next job? Perhaps they’re not fans of learning within an educational setting or they’ve trained in something and want to change completely? Then a traineeship could be a good choice.
A traineeship can provide the following:
- Regular wage straight away
- Training on the job so they’ll be learning new skills that can be transferred if wanting to later on
- Experience of practical work rather than learning theories or about the work involved at school or college
- Travel opportunities and the ability to network and meet other likeminded people
Please pass on our details if this something you recommend for someone.
